What is a Postal Code?
A postal code is a part of an address that is usually used by Canada Post for directing mail but is also an excellent tool for verifying addresses. It is made up of six characters in the format letter-number-letter number-letter- number. An example of a postal code would be the postal code for City Hall in Edmonton at 1 Sir Winston Churchill Square is T5J 2R7. The first three characters designate an area in Edmonton and the last three designate the specific block where the address is located. Postal codes for any address can be looked up here on the Canada Post website.

Why Does It Matter?
Edmonton postal codes are important for the verification of addresses when properties are listed for sale. Even though postal codes are usually used for directing the mail to a certain address, they have become important in mapping addresses of houses online and especially on the MLS System (publicly available at realtor.ca), which real estate agents use to search and advertise homes for sale.
