What is Home Heating Fuel? | Real Estate Definition

By Alan F Macdonald

What is Home Heating Fuel?

On a real estate listing, heating fuel refers to the kind of fuel that provides heat for a home. Most heating fuels are fossil fuels, but some may come from renewable sources.

Real Estate Agent Explains Heating Fuels

The heating fuels recognized by the Edmonton Real Estate Board are:

Heating Fuel Abbreviation
Coal COAL
Electric ELEC
Geo Thermal GEO
Natural Gas NGAS
Oil OIL
Propane PROPA
Solar SOLAR
Wood WOOD

Other heating fuels are more common in different parts of the country, but the most common heating fuel in Edmonton is natural gas. The abundance of natural gas and ease of delivery makes it a cost-effective and simple heating fuel. Heating types using furnaces and boilers alike are mostly fueled by natural gas.

Why Does It Matter?

Some heating fuels are a lot more work than others. If you came across a home that required wood for a heating fuel, you might want to know that you’ll be splitting wood every week to keep warm – and shoveling coal might not be appropriate for an elderly couple.

If a home is heated with geothermal heating, there may be no heating cost at all, while solar panels may allow a homeowner to sell electricity back to the electrical grid, but could require maintenance.
